Holiday season is a time where we anticipate to be surrounded by family, friends, and overall an enjoyble time. Unfortunately, this can be a lot of preasure for some individuals who find all of these external factors overwhelming.
According to different studies up to 44% of the population feels preasured/overwhelmed and even deppressed during the holidays. This can be traced back to all the marketing and social preasure that is trying to convice us that we are supposed to be happy, surrounded by family, giving away presents and overspending.
Christmas depression is a real thing that can be prevented and managed properly. Today we want to share with you a couple of tips that will help you cope with the season.

Tips To Prevent Holiday Depression

1.- Don’t compare yourself: With all the social media around us, it’s easy to fall in the trap of comparing yourself and assuming that everybody is having a perfect time. Remember, social media can be deceiving and everybody is facing different situations that might not be perfect. Recognize the good in your life and don’t compare yourself, remember, comparison is a thief of joy.

2.- Be grateful:  Don`t take for granted the blessings in your life. Everybody has something to be thankful for, and it’s our job to celebrate that. If you are single, celebrate it, if you have a job, be grateful for it, if you got family, appreciate it. Remember, all families have problems, and even the most perfect couples argue from time to time, you are very blessed to be who you are, and to have what you have, and that deserves to be celebrated.

3.- Be intentional:Be intentional and contact close friends, family members, or all of the company that can make you feel loved and appreciated. Spending time with those that we love can cheer us up, especially if we are feeling down or lonely. If there is an activity that you love, be intentional and take the time to enjoy it.

4.- Practice generosity: Give to others, not only presents, but a kind smile, a gentle word, a gift, or even quality time could do wonders. Giving makes us feel connected with people around us and bring us a sense of being whole.

5.- Be wise: Be wise and acknowledge situations/persons that can make you feel anxious and avoid them. If it’s a family member, avoid sitting next to them during dinner time. If it is a certain event where you are not obligated to go (exam, a work party/ ex-college students reunion, etc) and you don´t feel like going, just skip it and be gentle with yourself.

6.- Spend time under the sun:  Sunlight naturally makes us feel better, happier and more motivated. Even 20 minutes of natural light exposure can improve our mood and make us feel better. So don`t hesitate and have some fun outside.

7.-  Let go: It can be easy to get stuck in negative situations that happened in the past and that can affect our present. Let go of all of those things, forgive, and take the conscious decision to move forward to the incredible things that life is offering you right now. Remember, at the end of the day you deserve the best!

Most of this tips are things that I implement on my life, not just during the holidays, but every time I feel overwhelmed or pressured and they work wonders to me. Remember, the holiday season its a time to enjoy at your pace and our responsability to take good take good care of our principal priority, our selves.
